Hamlinian presidential election, 2012
The 2012 Hamlinian Presidential Election was an election that took place in the Hamlinian Republic to elect a new President of the Hamlinian Republic. The election took place on July 12, 2012, while the MicroWiki voting took place on June 2, 2012. Vice President Daniel Stefanko won over Titus Smith by a slim margin of two votes. The inauguration of Stefanko was held on August 1, 2012.
The election cycle started noticeably earlier than the 2011 Elections, and saw a more widespread field of candidates. The cycle began with current President Casey Hamlin entering the race right after the Hamlinian Civil War, during a time where Hamlin was under intense scrutiny after the Hamlingate incident, and in turn, many people were looking for the alternative to Hamlin. On December 14, 2011, that person came when Chairman of the Hamlinian Communist Party and President of the Former People's Republic of the Oasis Islands Phil Heisner went into the race in an attempt to bring the party to power. After a rise in the polls, a Coalition Against Terrorist States Tribunal stripped Heisner of his ability to run in the race. Later that month, Vice President of the Hamlinian Republic Daniel Stefanko announced his campaign in an attempt to beat Hamlin in a rematch from the 2011 Elections. In January, Hamlin switched his party affiliation to the Hamlinian Libertarian Party in a possible attempt to avoid losing the Empire Party's nomination. On April 8, 2012, former Prime Minister of Starland and new Hamlinian citizen Titus Smith created the Hamlinian Social Liberal Party and announced his candidacy. On May 15, 2012 in a surprise announcement, Hamlin suspended his campaign and became Stefanko's running mate, ending an era for Hamlinian politics.
On June 2, 2012, MicroWiki community members took to the ballot box and voted in the election. Smith came out as the decisive victor, getting 6 votes to Daniel Stefanko's 1 vote. Since each vote only held half weight, Smith ended the night with 3 votes compared to Stefanko's 1. On June 27, the Hamlinian Senate passed a bill put forward by Stefanko that would move the election up to two weeks after the motion carried. The motion was approved and carried by Speaker Hamlin on June 28, making the election on July 12, 2012. This will also move the inauguration up to late July, thus cutting Hamlin's second and final term short, although Hamlin gave no signs of dismay, as he co-sponsored and failed to veto the bill.
On July 12, 2012, voters took to the polls. The first three states to have their results revealed were Stefankostan, Sonoristan and Hamlinistan respectively. Stefanko took Stefankostan and Smith took Hamlinistan and Sonoristan. The two state wins would be the end of Smith's winning streak as Stefanko would go on to take Hamlinia, which tied the candidates at 6 each. The Oasis Islands served as the tie breaker, which Stefanko won three votes to one vote. Stefanko was declared President-Elect at 1:24pm Eastern Daylight Time, with the authentication taking place at 10:30pm EDT that night, after Smith cast his delayed ballot and conceded.
The Entrance of HamlinOn November 24, 2011, Current Incumbent Casey Hamlin announced he was running for a third term. This was when he was President of the Hamlinian Government in Exile, and announced his candidacy for that office, and President of the Hamlinian Republic
The Entrance of Heisner
On November 27, 2011, Chairman of the Hamlinian Communist Party and President of the defunct People's Republic of the Oasis Islands Phillip Heisner announced his candidacy for the Presidency. He was running for the Communist Party nomination, and was widely expected to get it. Although he was a controversial figure, he had enough communist support to become a serious challenger to Hamlin in the election. Hamlin for the most part ignored Heisner and continued to push forward to the General Election, which he was sure Heisner would not be competing in.
On December 14, 2011, the Hamlinian News Network and the Hamlinian Empire Party announced the results of a MicroWiki public opinion poll showing that Heisner had a wide majority of the MicroWiki public support over Hamlin. The Hamlin campaign called Heisner "a flavor of the month" while Heisner insisted that he "was here too win". Once again, Hamlin kept on ignoring Heisner and kept trumpeting his successes as President, while Heisner tried to portray Hamlin as a warmonger and portrayed Hamlin as lacking foreign policy knowledge, to which Hamlin resented.
In December 2011, Heisner suspiciously suspended his campaign during reports that the Hamlinian Republic was to be attacked by an "underground communist bloc", by King Quentin I of Wyvern. Heisner was arrested and was charged in a Coalition Against Terrorist States tribunal with several charges. The charges from the threat were dropped, but several charges remained. On December 22, 2011, Heisner was denied the ability to run after a CATS tribunal. He was also forced to relinquish his citizenship for six months, and left the country the next day.
Stefanko Enters, Hamlin Continues to Struggle
The day Heisner began his second day of CATS trial, Daniel Stefanko joined the race. It was seen that Hamlin would likely take back first place, but Hamlin was taken by surprise in MicroWiki polling as Stefanko began a public rise. The Hamlin campaign was very surprised that the once struggling Stefanko rose above Hamlin. Stefanko was going for the Hamlinian Empire Party nomination uncontested, and was considered the de facto nominee on April 7, 2012, with the Empire Party cancelling their primaries. The Stefanko campaign remained quiet since his nomination, seemingly waiting for later months to begin campaigning.
Smith Enters, Hamlin Re-Gains Strength
The next day on April 8, Titus Smith, former Prime Minister of Starland and new Hamlinian citizen founded the Hamlinian Social Liberal Party and announced his candidacy. This was more bad news for Stefanko after Hamlin released the new economic numbers for the nation, citing more than two hundred USD extra that was added to the budget during Q1 2012, with HNN claiming that "If Hamlin can continue this growth and somehow fix the Hamlinian foreign policy, he is invincible for a third term.", citing his foreign policy struggles with the MicroWiki community. During the month of April until the present, Hamlin and Stefanko are in a dead heat, while Smith remained behind.
Hamlin Suspends Campaign
In a surprise move, Hamlin suspended his campaign on May 15, 2012 and announced his retirement at the end of his second term. He did, however, join the Stefanko ticket and became Stefanko's Vice Presidential Nominee. The Smith Campaign responded the same day with a statement stating farewell to Hamlin, but saying that he was in it for the long run. After the announcement, many predicted that Stefanko would easily cruise to victory, but even Hamlin requested that Stefanko "not get cocky".
Smith Wins MicroWiki
On June 2, 2012, MicroWiki community members took to the ballot box and voted in the election. Smith came out as the decisive victor, getting 6 votes to Daniel Stefanko's 1 vote. Since each vote only held half weight, he ended the night with 3 votes compared to Stefanko's 1.
Stefanko was declared President-Elect at 1:24pm Eastern Daylight Time, with the authenticating of the ballots occurring at 10:30pm EDT after Smith's delayed ballot return and concession.
The election season started out much earlier than the 2011 season, seemingly due to power struggles and the want to oust Hamlin, who had been growing increasingly un-popular in late December 2011 - Early 2012. Unfazed by this, Hamlin was the first to enter the race, followed closely by Phil Heisner, leader of the Hamlinian Communist Party. Heisner was forced by a Coalition of Terrorist States tribunal to withdraw from the race, and relinquished his citizenship the next day. Soon after that, Vice President of the Hamlinian Republic Daniel Stefanko entered the race. In a poll conducted by HNN between Hamlin, Heisner and Stefanko, Stefanko came in last behind Heisner and Hamlin with no votes, but surged to beat Hamlin in an HNN Politics poll after Heisner's departure. It looked as if it would be a Hamlin vs. Stefanko rematch until former leader of Starland Titus Smith entered after becoming a Hamlinian citizen. Hart came at a time where Hamlin was re-gaining steam after an announcement that more than two hundred USD of surplus was added to the budget in Q1 alone. In a surprise move, Hamlin suspended his campaign on May 15, 2012 and became Stefanko's running mate.
