The Papacy of the Proto-Cults of New Wessex was an institution which was founded to head the creative and cultural ideas of the populations of Orly and the Kingdom of Wilcsland concerning religion and to provide spiritual leadership to the numerous local cults, most notably the Tree Cult and the Cult of the Black Cat. In recent times, the office has become mainly ceremonial, being bestowed as an honour to usually foreign members of the Orlian College of Cardinals. The Pope is appointed by the King, in an example of caesaropapism.
The Papacy was created by Declan I, King of Atlantis, in 2004, but the monarchy and papacy quickly turned into rivals, with two of the Popes (Alexander I & Marcus I) plotting to seize the throne. The First Papacy existed between 2004 and 2009, when it was abolished by the King after a plot by Pope Marcus I to usurp the throne was uncovered.
The Second Papacy was created later that year, after King Declan I allowed Marcus I to return to the Kingdom. It was then once more abolished, in June 2010, after the Pope was attacked by citizens after talking about the King in an inappropriate manner. The Third Papacy was created on 1 January 2011, when King Declan I gave the title of Pope to the then Crown Prince Jonathan of Austenasia, who took the papal name of Alexander II. On 2 January 2012, it was decided that pontifical terms would last for three months, and Popes would be appointed from the Orlian College of Cardinals. Six have been appointed since then.
